Drug uses

Norvasc is a calcium channel blocker. The medicine helps prevent heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems by controlling high blood pressure.

Before taking

Do not take the drug together with another one containing amlodipine. You may need additional monitoring in case you are also using some other medicines for high blood pressure (e.g., diuretics, beta-blockers), intravenous (IV) calcium, or other medicines for chest pain (e.g. nitroglycerin).

You mustn't start or stop using any medicine without the approval of your doctor. Inform your doctor beforehand of any other medical conditions including allergies, heart disease, liver disease, pregnancy or breast-feeding.

It's better to stay away from this medicine if you have a history of low blood pressure.

Directions

Follow your doctor's directions when using the medication. You may take Norvasc either on an empty stomach or with food.

Store the drug at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat, moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Take the medication until the course of treatment is over and continue to use Norvasc even if you feel well.

Try not to miss any doses. If you miss a dose of this drug, take it as soon as possible. But skip the missed dose in case you do not remember until the next day. Do not double the dose.

Warnings/ Precautions

Do not take Novasc if you have a history of an allergic reaction to any ingredient of the medicine.

Do not stop using the medication without the permission of your doctor. If you take the drug to treat angina, you should be aware that the pain of an acute attack if taken at the time of the acute attack will be not relieved. The medication helps to reduce the number of angina attacks only if you take it regularly.

The medication may cause dizziness. Avoid driving, operating machinery or doing other potentially dangerous tasks until you know how you react to this medicine.

Norvasc may cause a headache especially on the early stages of taking the drug. Later, headache usually becomes less noticeable. Avoid taking alcohol while taking this medication.

Consult with your doctor before you start taking any new drug, either prescription or over-the-counter.

Brush and floss your teeth carefully to reduce swelling and tenderness of your gums, while taking the medication. Caution is advised when using Norvasc in the elderly. They may be more sensitive to the effects of this medication.

Inform you doctor in case you plan a pregnancy. Do not breast-feed while taking Norvasc because it is still unknown whether this drug is excreted in breast milk.

Norvasc side effects

This medicine may cause some side effects. The serious side effects include: tender, bleeding, or swollen gums; a fast or irregular heartbeat; swelling of your feet or legs; dark urine; difficulty breathing; worsening chest pain; yellowing of the eyes or skin. You must contact your doctor immediately in case you experience any of them.

Less serious side effects include drowsiness, headache, fatigue, flushing, nausea, stomach pain, muscle cramps, weakness.

An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely. But if it occurs, get an emergency medical help immediately. Itching, rash, severe dizziness, swelling, trouble breathing can be the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Overdose

Contact an emergency room immediately in case overdose is suspected. The common symptoms of overdose include fainting, dizziness, fast heartbeat.

Additional information

If you want to make the medicine do its job properly, take Norvasc at regularly scheduled time. It's better to take the drug it at the same time each day. Control your blood pressure while taking this medication.

It is not allowed to share Norvasc with others for whom it was not prescribed as well as using the medication for other health conditions.
